California's Long-Embattled Ports Regain Favor with Importers

U.S. Importers Favor Southern California Ports Again

Southern California's ports, including Los Angeles and Long Beach, are experiencing a resurgence in trade as U.S. importers shift back to these key gateways. The months of September, October, and November witnessed significant year-over-year increases in containerized imports, ranging from 17% to 31%, according to port data. This marks a reversal from the prior trend that saw Gulf Coast and East Coast ports gain prominence due to pandemic-related disruptions and manufacturing shifts.

Improved labor relations with dockworkers have contributed to the renewed interest in Southern California ports. Resolving long-standing contract talks last year has fostered a more favorable environment for logistics operations. Additionally, recent disruptions at the Panama Canal and the Suez Canal, vital routes for East Coast and Gulf Coast ports, have prompted importers to reroute their shipments through California. This helps avoid prolonged transit times and higher costs associated with alternative routes.

For many importers, California ports offer cost-effective and convenient shipping options due to their proximity to Asia and robust truck and rail connections to various parts of the country. Jamie Bragg, Chief Supply-Chain Officer at Tailored Brands, noted that the California ports are preferable for many due to their cost-efficiency and accessibility. Tailored Brands, the parent company of Men’s Wearhouse and Jos. A. Bank, shifted most of its imports back to Southern California from Houston after facing delays and challenges during the pandemic.

Despite the East Coast ports gaining traction in recent years, Southern California ports are making a comeback, capturing 36% of the market share. The West Coast had seen a decline from handling 50% of U.S. containerized imports two decades ago to 33% in the previous year. The recent shift back to Southern California indicates a potential reversal of this trend.

Importers are drawn to the West Coast's advantages, especially given the ongoing contract talks and potential labor disruptions at East Coast ports. The strategic proximity of Southern California ports to Asia, coupled with robust transportation connections, makes them an appealing choice for importers looking to streamline their supply chains.

As the industry watches the evolving dynamics, the resurgence of Southern California ports raises questions about the sustainability of this trend and whether it signifies a turning point in the longstanding competition between West Coast and East Coast gateways.
