The Rivian R1T electric pickup truck has been earning accolades from automotive publications like Car & Driver, mainly for its exceptional acceleration and off-road capabilities. However, my recent experience with it revealed that, like many electric vehicles (EVs), adapting to it as a daily driver comes with its own learning curve.
One notable difference in driving an EV compared to a traditional gasoline car is the need to master nuances such as "one-pedal driving" and optimizing the battery range. Additionally, several EVs, including the Rivian, heavily rely on large touchscreens for basic functions, diverting attention from the road.
As the first electric pickup on the market since September 2021, the R1T set a benchmark for competitors like the F-150 Lightning, Chevrolet Silverado EV, and Tesla Cybertruck. The Rivian combines cutting-edge features with a fresh design, avoiding the caricature-like appearance seen in some electric vehicles.
During my test drive of the R1T Performance all-wheel-drive with a large battery pack, priced at $89,600 and offering an EPA-estimated range of 307 miles, I encountered both highs and lows.
One distinctive feature of the Rivian is its regenerative braking system, capturing kinetic energy to replenish lost range. However, the regen system, even in its standard configuration, felt more sensitive than most, requiring time to master for smooth stops and starts.
The infotainment system proved challenging, with no physical buttons on the dashboard, just two unlabeled toggles on the steering wheel. The controls are contextual, varying based on the screen mode. The massive display handles everything from mirrors and seats to entertainment and climate, demanding careful pre-set preferences to avoid distracted driving.
Despite the learning curve, some features stood out positively. The integration of Amazon's Alexa voice assistant helps manage commands, and the intuitive navigation screen allows easy adjustments. The Rivian app includes A Better Route Planner for trip planning and a built-in Spotify app with a convenient QR code login feature.
However, the absence of Apple CarPlay or Android Auto phone-mirroring might disappoint some users. In conclusion, while the Rivian R1T is undeniably innovative and enjoyable to drive, it demands a significant learning curve for those transitioning from traditional vehicles.
